The use of Native American as mascots has been a heated subject for many years. Many have admired the native Indians for there hard word and there instructive principals that helped our forefathers to settle here in the United States. But some find it very offensive for people to dress up as Native Indians especially since the native Indian culture has had many ill thought out issue put upon them.
Years before the 1960's Indians were not portrayed as positive role models. They were portrayed as inferior men and women that would not know night and day. This offensive behavior was taken on by the National Congress of American Indians who created a campaign to eliminate negative stereotyping of Native American people in the media. The focus of this group was to concentrate on the cartoon and movies were Indians were seen in such a negative light. Other thought that native americna mascots paid homage to their cultures.
